Khaleda addresses Comilla rally today Plans more visit in Dec
Staff Reporter :
BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia is going to Comilla today (Saturday) to address a public rally at Comilla Town Hall in the afternoon.
The BNP-led 20 party alliance are arranging the rally as part of their countrywide mass contact programme to drum up public support in favour of their demand for holding a fresh
inclusive election under a non-party government system. Top leaders of the other partners of the alliance will also address the rally.
On the occasion of Khaleda Zia’s Comilla visit, the district town has been decorated with lighting and colours and a number of gates have been erected on the Comilla-Dhaka Highway welcoming the BNP Chief, reports a correspondent.
The district BNP leaders said that they were expecting about five lakh people in the rally where the party chief would give a guideline of the anti-government movement.
Earlier, Khaleda Zia addressed public rallies in Kishoreganj, Natore and Nilphamari on November 12 and 1 and October 23 respectively.
BNP accused the government of creating obstacles towards holding the rally of Comilla. “The government is carrying out various undemocratic acts ahead of Saturday’s rally. The local administration and the ruling party men are intimidating our leaders and activists and removing our posters and banners in different parts of Comilla, including Daudkandi and Chandina.” BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed said in a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the city on Friday.
He claimed that the people of Comilla and its adjoining districts are getting prepared to welcome Khaleda Zia. The rally will turn into a human sea with spontaneous participation of lakhs of people braving all obstacles, he added.
Rizvi Ahmed also said the present government is trying to hang on to power using the law enforcers. He alleged that the ruling party did not allow them to exercise their democratic rights though the AL cries for democracy only to deceive people.
Meanwhile, Khaleda Zia is planning to visit some other districts in the monthe of December. The schedules of the district tour in other districts will be finalised after the rally of Comilla, said the party sources.
The sources further said, the BNP-led alliance is planning to launch its final movement in January and in December Khaleda Zia would address some other rallies to drum up public support in favour of their movement. When asked, Rizvi Ahmed said that if needed, the BNP Chief would visit more districts.
