The High Court on Tuesday refused to grant bail to Regent Group Chairman Mohammad Shahed alias Shahed Karim in a case filed on charge of issuing fake Covid-19 certificates and illegally charging patients for tests and treatments.
The High Court bench of justice S M Kuddus Zaman and Justice Md Khairul Alam rejected his bail petition after a short hearing.
On July 7 in 2020, a case was filed against Shahed and 16 others over issuing fake Covid-19 test reports and charging people unfairly for testing and treatment.
Shahed was arrested in Satkhira on July 15 last year when he was trying to leave the country by boat.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment in an arms case on September 28 in 2020. RAB members raided the Uttara and Mirpur branches of Regent Hospital on 6 July in 2020 and arrested eight people on charges of issuing fake Covid-19 certificates and charging exorbitant fees for Covid testing and treatment of inpatients.
On 7 July last year, the head office of the Regent Group and both the hospitals were sealed off and 17 people, including Shahed, were sued on charges of issuing fake Covid test reports and taking money from Covid patients for tests and treatment.
