Can democratic Ukraine depend on US and NATO against Russian aggression?

It is said that this is a ‘war’ between Ukraine and Russia, and the two countries are fighting for a win. But this has not been so. Right from the beginning on February 24, it has been a plain Russian aggression against a much smaller and weaker but sovereign state Ukraine which under the leadership of President Volodymyr Zeleneskyy has been trying to build up a resistance against the mighty Russian military with sophisticated weapons and ammunition. In the 117 days after the Russian invasion, more than one fifth of Ukrainian territory is now under control of the Russian military.
There is no war between Ukraine and Russia, only one sided military operation. The US and NATO are not risking a counter aggression against Russia. They are supplying only defensive weapons and money to Ukraine to fight to contain Russia for fear that the war is not widened. It is admitted by the Western leaders that the Russian war against Ukraine is, in fact, a war between Russia and the Western powers.
The Secretary General of NATO said that war in Ukraine may continue for years. His comments came as UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson also warned of the need to brace for a longer-term conflict. “We must prepare for the fact that it could take years. We must not let up in supporting Ukraine,” the NATO chief said in an interview with German newspaper Bild.
What is not being understood if Russia is allowed to continue its super power military operation, there will be no Ukraine worth saving. It will be completely devastated and ruined. Russia proves its super power capacity and courage to apply. Hypocrisy of the West will be exposed as glaringly as never before. Democracy in other countries will be losing hope for its future. The rulers of such weak democracies will be encouraged to depend on their armed forces to establish a communist kind of dictatorship.
What was, after all, the fault of Ukraine which is a free society with a democratic government? It wanted to join NATO? It has every moral right to do so. But with the pretext of security threats from Ukraine, a possible future member of NATO, Russia attacked the country. Soon after the Russian tanks rolled onto the lands of Ukraine, President Zeleneskyy announced resistance with the call to the west to whole-heartedly back their cause. As time has passed, the Ukrainian side suffered huge casualties, destruction of infrastructure and displacement of people. Against the increasing military attack, at one point, President Zelenskyy also declared that it would not join NATO. But it did not appease Russia, and the Russian war machine has been continuing its devastation on Ukraine taking control of Ukrainian territories one after another. Its ulterior motive is now to conquer Ukraine and show the world how reluctant the Western powers to help other countries in facing military actions. In other words, the commitment of the Western powers is not as strong as it sounds.
But the words of support and weaponries are not helping the Ukrainian side to repel the Russian army. The conduct of the Western powers looks from outside very selfish. Their action of sanction and such other moves have only created worldwide economic crisis.
Now after the Russian attack, Ukraine has become a symbol of resistance for the world’s weaker and smaller democratic states. If Ukraine ultimately falls to Russian aggression, will there be any hope for other smaller but democratic nations of the world to survive independently against invasion?
The West had suffered many military setbacks for lack of sensible leadership. The US and NATO countries must be ready to get militarily involved wisely. Empty threats or loud commitments will isolate them and that will not be good for their own security.
We hope, the Western powers will learn right lessons and not let down the free world.
