BRT project to curb traffic jam in city

Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) is going to launch Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project to reduce traffic jam in the city.
The work will begin shortly, the officials of the organisation said at a workshop titled “Role of Bus Rapid Transit as a Traffic Solution for Dhaka City” in the city’s National Press Club on Wednesday.
The BRT, a developed bus depending mass-transportation method, will help to transport passengers comfortably and rapidly from one place to another at a minimum cost.
The separate lanes and modern bus stations will be built, and E-Ticketing systems will be introduced.
Besides, the wheel chairs will be available for the backward and old people.
The length of the project will be 22.4 kilometers from Gazipur to Keraniganj via Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA).
Each bus will be 18 metres long capable of carrying 140 passengers per trip. Each stoppage time is one and a half minutes. There will be 16 stations. About 20,000 passengers can be transported per hour.
The project cost has been estimated for US $ 500 million to be financed by the World Bank.
Engineer Mohammad Anisur Rahman and Engineer Afil Uddin, Project Directors of the BRT, detailed the information.
Forest and Environment Ministry Joint-Secretary Abdullah Al Mohsin Chowdhury, BRT Communication Expert Epaa Majumder, DTCA’s Public Transport Adviser Frits Olislagar and BRT Awareness Case Project team leader Ramendra Majumder were, among others, present.
