A gang used to extort money in some areas of the capital using the names of the top terrorists. Most of the time they targeted the businessmen and building owners. The Victims were even threatened if they did not pay their extortion. This gang later carried out attacks and robberies into the victim’s companies or organization.
Khandaker Al Moin, Director of the RAB’s legal and media wing,
made the remarks at a press conference of the RAB Media Center, Kawran Bazar in the capital on Sunday.
Earlier on Saturday, RAB arrested six members of the gang from South Keraniganj and Savar’s Dhamrai area.
The arrestees were identified as Md. Zahirul Islam alias Zahir (33), mastermind of the gang, Jasim Uddin (34), Md. Jahidul Islam Sikder (26), Md. Khairul Bhuiyan (20), Md. Rakib Hasan (20), and Md. Nayan (26), At that time, four chapatis used for robbery and Tk 1,93,000 looted from the showroom were seized from them.
Khandaker Al Moin said that during the preliminary interrogation, the arrested persons informed the RAB that they were paots of an organized criminal gang based in city’s Mohammadpur with 8-10 members.
The ring had been extorting money from businessmen, small traders and building owners in the area for the past few years using the names of fugitive top terrorists in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur, Basila, Shyamoli and adjoining areas. If they refused to pay the demanded extortions, they threaten the victims in various ways.
Even then, when someone refuses to pay, they attack and rob victims’ homes and businesses.
They were given thrcats threats for not paying the subscription.
On the evening of October 12, a gang of robbers stabbed manager Wadud Sajeeb and motor technician Nurnabi Hasan in the Eden Auto’s showroom of Uttara Motors in Shyamlibagh area of Mirpur.
At that time, the robber gang vandalized glasses, computers, laptops and cash drawers and robbed Tk 5, 50,000 in cash and desktop monitors, RAB officials added.
KM Abdul Khaleq, on behalf of the showroom owner, filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on the day after the incident.
