‘Independent judiciary must to ensure rights of people’

Law Commission Chairman and former Chief Justice A B M Khairul Haque on Saturday said that experience, integrity, boldness and mental strength of the judges could establish an independent judiciary.
“Independent judiciary is a must for ensuring the rights of the people. Experience, integrity, boldness and mental strength of the judges can ensure an independent judiciary in the country,” he said.
He said this in a seminar titled “Freedom of Judiciary: Expectation and Achievement” held in Nabab Nawab
Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on the Dhaka University (DU) campus. Bangladesh Ain Samity organised the seminar.
Khairul Haque said that the officials of the judiciary in the past went to Secretariat for their promotion and transfer. Sometimes, the officials offered bribe. But now check and balance has been established.
The Law Commission Chairman said, the judges face some problems. But they have to tackle it with talent.
Bangladesh Ain Samity President AKM Afzal-ul-Munir presided over the programme while National Human Rights Commission Chairman Professor Mizanur Rahman, Senior Jurist Barrister M Amirul Islam and Advocate Abdullah Mohammad Hasan spoke in the function, among others, as the special guests.
Former presidents of Bangladesh Ain Samity Mollah Abu Kawser and Dr Shahjahan Saju addressed the seminar, among others.
Mizanur Rahman said, justice should be the motto of the independent judiciary for the well being of the people. It has to think about the rights of the people, he said.
