Mezbah killing in `crossfire` a drama by DB: Family

Staff Reporter :Mesbah Uddin alias Tarek was beaten to death by a team of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) for refusing to sell a piece of land to a high profile police official in the city’s Dunia area on September 14. He said police beat Mesbah to death and then staged a ‘drama of crossfire’ in an attempt to hide the truth. Mesbah’s father, Mohammad Abu Jafar Sikder, claimed this in a press briefing at National Press Club on Tuesday Morning. Jafar said that seven to eight plainclothes police on the night of September 13 went to their house at Dunia and introduced themselves as DB officials from Minto Road. They dragged Tarek out of the house ignoring their tearful requests and clobbered him mercilessly before taking him away, he said. He alleged that they waited for the whole day in front of DB Headquarters and later they went to the Kadamtali Police Station where from they asked to go to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) morgue. Finally, they found the bullet-hit body of Mesbah there. Morgue sources said that the body bore three bullets and several marks of torture injuries with two holes in the chest. “We have one and a half katha of land adjacent to the five and a half katha of land of a female police official. She pressured us to sell the land to her. But we refused to do it. At one stage, she and her husband angry with us and made the killing by the DB members to eliminate Mesbah on the fateful night,” he claimed. He said that Kadamtali police did not file any case in this connection. He demanded the exemplary punishment to the DB personnel with the connection the killing of his son.
