Jatiya Party MP Shariful Islam gets bail in graft case

The High Court on Monday granted anticipatory bail to Shariful Islam Jinnah, Jatiya Party lawmaker from Bogura-2, for three weeks in a corruption case filed for amassing wealth illegally and concealing wealth information.
The HC, however, ordered the accused lawmaker to surrender to the trial court concerned in three weeks in connection with the case.
The HC bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim passed the order after holding hearing on a bail petition filed by Shariful Islam.
Lawyers Sheikh Md Sirajul Islam and Munshi Moniruzzaman appeared for the petitioner, while Khurshid Alam Khan stood for Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state during hearing of the petition.
Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik told the reporters that the HC bench granted bail to the accused for three weeks following his petition in which he said he is a regular taxpayer and the National Board of Revenue has never questioned his tax affairs.
Advocate Munshi Moniruzzaman said, “He doesn’t have any illegal wealth beyond the information he has submitted to the ACC. But the ACC has filed a case with malicious intention by bypassing the statement of assets submitted to it.”
Upon hearing us the High Court has granted bail to him for three weeks, added the lawyer.
The ACC filed the case with its Dhaka Integrated District Office-1 on February 2 this year against Shariful Islam.
In the case, allegations of amassing wealth illegally worth Tk 1.59 crore and concealing wealth information worth Tk 89.27 lakh have been brought against this MP.
