Haji Selim tears down his illegal installations
BIWTA demolished 165 illegal structures

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority on Sunday demolished 165 illegal structures built on Buriganga banks by grabbers. The BIWTA authority had recovered about two acres of land from the illegal encroachers besides the riverbank.
Meanwhile, Dhaka-7 MP Haji Selim ruined his ‘illegal’ installation at Swarighat on the banks of the Buriganga, ahead of the BIWTA’s eviction drive.
Allegedly occupying the land, the MP’s men put up a signboard of his company’s water tank warehouse.
His associates claimed that they were renting the establishment. The BIWTA officials found the illegal structure already demolished when they went there to evict.
The MP’s associates said they took it upon themselves to dismantle the structure, fearing that their goods would have been damaged in case of eviction by the BIWTA.
“Haji Selim was not the owner of the establishment, but he rented the place to use it as a warehouse of his company,” Mohiuddin Ahmed, one of his associates told the journalists.
But, Mohiuddin did not mention from whom they rented the land. Besides, some locals alleged that the MP had occupied the land illegally.
During the eviction drive, the BIWTA demolished illegal installations from Imamganj to Swarighat in the northern bank of the Buriganga.
The drive, aimed at protecting the Buriganga from illegal grabbers, who illegally built establishments, was started on November 22 from Babubazar.
According to the BIWTA, all illegal installations along the Buriganga river from Imamganj to Loharpool under Chawkbazar and Lalbagh police stations in Old Dhaka will be removed by Monday. Officials from BIWTA, said illegal establishments had been demolished during the drive which began around 10:30 am and ended at 4:00 pm.
Muhammad Gulzar Ali, Joint Director of Dhaka river port was present when Mahbub Zaman, the Executive Magistrate conducted the drive.
Gulzar Ali said the eviction drive will surely stop further encroachment of the riverbanks. He said two 10 storied buildings, 20 one storied, 25 semi pucca, 60 tin houses and 50 makeshift fish wholesale stores were evicted during the drive.
