Rain wash Bangladesh only hope of gold medal
BSS, Incheon :
Rain washed away the Bangladesh only hope for gold medal in the XVII Asian Games vanished into blue as Tigers rival Sri Lanka were declared winners at the toss of a coin in the rain affected semifinals at Yeonhui Cricket Ground on Thursday.
Sri Lanka initially won the toss and opted to field first. The play was halted due to rain, at time Bangladesh recovered from a bad start and were looking good at 59 runs for three wickets in 11 overs.
The super over also could not be played as the condition deteriorated. The Match Referee Venkatapathi Raju later decided to spin a coin to decide the match’s fate.
There was a pall of gloom as hundreds of Tigers fan turned up to cheer but were disappointed as the lady luck did not smile in Bangladesh favour. Players BCB organizers, Journalists and fans were lost in thoughts at the silly rules taken by the authority to decide for a medal.
People were stunned by this foolish rule applied as per ICCs rules, but one cannot understand why there is no an extra day allowed for medal matches.
It will look silly that if it rains tomorrow and again Sri Lanka by the toss of coin become the Asian Games champions without playing the semifinal and final. How can a toss decide one’s fate in such a big event.
