Mad fury is no respect for Islam or proof of being a good Muslim
IN a gruesome lynching in Burimari under Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat, an angry mob beat a man to death and later set fire to his body as an act of rage for hurting the Muslims’ religious sentiment on Thursday. The grisly incident, occurred following spreading of a rumour of defaming the Holy Quran, drew huge criticism from people of all walks of life across the country.
Media reports in national dailies said that on Saturday police arrested six persons in connection with the three cases filed earlier. These three cases have been filed with Patgram PS over the lynching incident, one by the victim’s family and the other two by police and the local UP chairman. Police also succeeded in identifying 20 persons directly involved in lynching of the man after analyzing of video and CCTV footages of the incident and also talking to over one hundred local people.
According to reports, after the prayers, Jewel, 50, went to see the Holy Quran and the Hadith books in the mosque’s bookshelf. Suddenly, a Holy Quran fell to the floor from the bookshelf. The mob beating that led to the murder started when a rumour of insulting the Holy Quran was spread.
A three-member committee of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of Bangladesh found no proof of the Holy Quran desecration. We are just speechless by the brutal death of the man by the angry mob.
As reported, Shahidunnabi Jewel and his friend had come from Rangpur in a motorbike and had stopped at a mosque in Burimari to say their prayers. Jewel, who was a librarian at Cantonment Public School and College in Rangpur, was mentally stressed after losing his job in March. Since then he used to take Indian medicines as prescribed by a doctor. On that day, he along with friend was going to Burimari to take the medicines as someone was supposed to bring there from India.
The brutal trends of ‘mob justice’ have taken the lives of many individuals where the mob has acted as judge, jury and executioner. We have seen instances of mob beating to death of alleged muggers, kidnappers and robbers without ascertaining whether they had done any crime.
The people are going through a hard time and can be emotionally aroused easily. Brutality has become the way of governing the country. It is a dangerous situation for building an orderly society. Thugs and criminals are dominating. There is no rule of law. The educated people are no good for guiding the country.
The country is in a state of anarchy. Mere police actions will not make our society sober or responsible. We need educated and responsible leadership to save us from all kinds of madness.
