Rohingyas face a dire situation as humanitarian aid is dropping

MEDIA report said the global funding for the Rohingyas may fall short as the NGO activities have drastically decreased amid coronavirus pandemic and there might be more shortage of fund in the future. Every big and developed economy which provide the fund for Rohingyas and such other global disaster prone areas are facing serious economic recession and mounting unemployment hard hit by coronavirus pandemic.
Donor countries would be naturally busy now to rebuild their own economies. Their ability to commit assistance for humanitarian causes and funding NGO activities has already shrunk and is likely to further decline. There is a very unusual situation going to unveil and Bangladesh must be ready to face a very complicated situation despite being hard hit by the pandemic to feed the million people sheltered in refugee camps.
According to the UN Refugee Agency, a total of $308.7 million was sought from the international community for Rohingyas funding for 2020, but only $87 million or 27 percent were funded till May. We must say the only solution to the Rohingya problem lies in their return home under international supervision. But Myanmar is maneuvering from the beginning not to take its people back and has already stripped of their nationality. We believe only China can play a crucial role in making the repatriation possible.
Experts fear Myanmar may be using its ongoing fight with Arakan Army in Rakhine region as a pretext to avoid engaging in talks for repatriation. In this case we need help from our western fiends to bring pressure on Myanmar while Bangladesh must use its closer economic and business ties with China to win stronger diplomatic support to help resolve the crisis. It must seek support of the regional countries.
Now that humanitarian assistance to Rohingyas is drying up, a political solution is all the more important. Bangladesh has not enough resources to take load of the million people for long if external humanitarian aid drops. Our government must know it has invited the problem keeping the border open without using force on Myanmar Army to stop the exodus. Such situation could hasten deployment of international peace keeping force to halt the genocide and eviction of Rohingyas from their homes. The global situation is now changing fast, Bangladesh can’t wait much.
