There is no visible move of the government amidst the crisis of the narrowing remittance inflows, the loss of the foreign labour markets and the deterioration of the migrants’ welfare abroad. We’re highly surprised why there is no government directive to the foreign missions for providing all out support to our hapless workers those are working in their countries. Not only that the Ministries concerned also have no attention towards the exploration of new job markets for our workers abroad. No successive government has made any investment on migration. But the untrained and mostly illiterate workers take all the responsibilities on their own shoulders to purchase a future for their family and the country in exchange of hard labour. In many cases, the migrant workers’ health issues and workplaces safety are being neglected by the host countries. In particular, a large number of workers are facing troublesome situation in Saudi Arabia.
Many workers, especially women, have returned from Saudi Arabia with chronic and communicable diseases. There is no one to hear their pain and agony though the missions and the staffs are appointed by our government to support the migrants. It is clear that the government is only interested in their hard earned foreign exchange, whereas the migrant workers’ rights violations and health danger are not tolerable. In particular, if we want to say about female migrant workers it means the women who move to another country in order to find seasonal or temporary employments. Presently, there are more than 12 crore female migrant workers, among which almost 4 lakhs are from Bangladesh, and this number is increasing with every passing day.
Not only in Saudi Arabia, the female migrant workers usually remain underpaid, exploited, tortured, raped or even killed in different countries. What’s very sad is that there is no effective legislation in any country to protect the rights of the female workers on foreign soil.
