Posters still there
Banners, posters, leaflets and election campaign materials seeking nominations from Awami League and Jatiya Party were found in different areas of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
However, no election posters and banners of BNP aspirants were found in any areas of the two corporations.
The Election Commission on December 22 directed all nomination seekers to remove their campaign posters and banners within December 29.
The electoral code of conduct says that any candidate or any political party or any individual or organisation or institution on behalf of their candidates should not begin election campaign before allocation of the electoral symbol.
Banners and posters seeking nominations from Awami League and Jatiya Party have been found in different areas of DSCC and DNCC.
Many aspirant candidates have said the campaign material began to appear after the announcement of the election schedule on December 22.
Meanwhile, the EC instructed the Assistant Returning Officers on Friday to take necessary steps to remove all kinds of campaign materials, including posters and banners, as the nomination seekers are not paying heed to the directive.
Aziz Ahmed, an Old Dhaka resident, told The New Nation, “Different markets and big buildings around here are still covered with
posters of nomination seekers. Most of them are of Jatiya Party leader Monwara Taher Manu, Awami League leaders M Jasim Uddin, Aminul Islam Shamim, Monir Ahmed Mona, Fazilatunnesa Indira and Haji Abdul Kader.”
As councilor aspirants, AL leader Aminul Islam Shamim’s posters for DSCC Ward 9, Monirul Islam Rana’s posters for Ward 13, AL leader Jasim Uddin’s posters for Ward 13 and local Jatiya Party leader Shamimul Islam Tara’s posters for Ward 19 and JP local leader Monwara Taher Manu’s posters for reserved seat for female of Ward 35, 36 and 37 are still available in their respective areas.
Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Tajul Islam after attending an event at CIRDAP auditorium in the capital, said my ministry officials could not begin their work as Friday and Saturday were holidays, and that they would take action against those who would violate election code of conduct. As per the election schedule, the DSCC and DNCC elections will be held on January 30. The last date for nomination paper submission to the returning officers is December 31, while the nomination papers would be scrutinised on January 2.
The deadline for the withdrawal of candidature is January 9.
