CCC to dredge Karnaphuli river if permitted

Chittagong City Corporation desires to undergo dredging of Karnaphuli river if permission is given to them to help facilitate the mitigating the waterlogging situation in the city.
City Mayor Manzoor Alam and the former Mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury have reached an consensus in this issue.
 In this connection, former Mayor Mohiuddin chowdhury has sent D.O letter to PortChairman Rear Admiral NiZamuddin Ahmed on Wednesday. CCC Mayor told this reporter that CPA authority is not undertaking that much talked dredging work since long and so if permitted by CPA chairman, CCC will undergo this dredging work. Mentionablethat CPA has entrusted work of the dredging to a foreign firms at Tk.265 cr but that firm fled away on half way by misappropriating port money of Tk.165 cr recently.
 Following the suspension of the dredging work and misappropriation of huge govt fund, city mayor and former mayor expressed concerned over it.
The DO letter of former mayor was told that the development of sand lifting from Karnaphuli river yet to be sighted despite expenses of huge money .
 In this situation, for better navigation of the marine transports, and to ease the waterlogging in city due to siltation of Karnaphuli River, CCC is interested lift sand from the river channel with their own fund, sources said.
