Needs sustainable solution to Rohingya crisis

THE Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday informed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the same ministry that Dhaka is planning to take Myanmar to the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court for its repression on the Rohingyas. The Foreign Ministry also informed that Bangladesh would also take up the Rohingya issue with Myanmar and China during the upcoming UN General Assembly session. The JS committee expressed its dissatisfaction over the method of Rohingya issue handling by the government terming it inadequate. The committee advised the ministry concerned to step up diplomatic efforts in a more effective manner.
The ICC has the jurisdiction to prosecute individuals for the international crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and crimes of aggression and the ICJ, known as the World Court, is the principal judicial organ of the UN. After a long observation, the government seems undertaking correct course of action regarding Rohingya issues. We suggest the government should also maintain an alternative channel involving Rohingya leaders for forecasting upcoming challenges and possible way out. It’s to be noted that several heads of the state and government of different countries along with UN Security Council team visited Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh and also promised to work hard to resolve the crisis. But their efforts in this regard seem went futile.
Bangladesh government primarily took the Rohingya exodus very lightly being failed to understand the severity of the crisis and had no prior information before the exodus. In the modern state affairs, where prior information is vital for decision making, Dhaka failed to procure short credible information about the danger. Even, Bangladesh focused on the humanitarian aspect of the Rohingya overlooking its regional and national security threats.
The government should play strong role regarding Rohingya issue involving different stakeholders to gain political and economic mileage from the crisis. If Bangladesh fails to reach a sustainable solution to the Rohingya issue, it would remain as a permanent crisis in the south and southeast regions.
