BNP vows to get Khaleda free

The BNP on Thursday vowed to free its imprisoned chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia as early as possible. The party also made pledge to restore democracy in the country.
“Thursday was the 38th death anniversary of BNP founder and late President Ziaur Rahman who restored multi-party democracy. We have vowed this day to bring our party chief Begum Khaleda Zia out of jail,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir while talking to journalists after paying homage to Zia by placing wreaths at his grave in the capitals Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
Mirza Fakhrul said, “The nation always remembers this day with due respect.”
The BNP leader also said the current government destroyed democracy using muscle and administrative power.
“They have sent mother of democracy Begum Khaleda Zia to jail in false cases,” said Mirza Fakhrul.
“On this day, we’re taking a fresh vow to free Khaleda Zia and restore democracy holding the ideals of Ziaur Rahman,” he said.
“Though Zia’s political life was short, he had played an outstanding role in developing the country,” he said.
“Ziaur Rahman restored democracy, freedom of expression and strengthened economy. But it’s unfortunate that misrule has been imposed on people by snatching their voting rights,” Fakhurl said.
BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed said, their party will continue its struggle for the restoration of democracy.
“BNP will remain with people and carry out a movement until the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary and democracy are restored in Bangladesh ,” he said.
“The government is trying to eliminate the name of Ziaur Rahman from peoples’heart. But it will not be possible to do it as well the Bangladesh’s history,” Fakhrul said.
“The country’s people will remember Zia for many reasons, including for the restoration of democracy,” he said.
They also offered a munajat there seeking eternal peace for the leaders departed soul.
Apart from Mirza Fakhrul and Moudud Ahmed, BNP standing committee members Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, Vice-Chairmen Shahjahan Omar, AZM Zahid Hossain, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Ahmed Azam Khan, chairperson’s Adviser Amanullah Aman, Habibur Rahman Habib, Sirajuddin Ahmed, joint secretaries general Mahbubuddin Khokon, and Khairul Kabir Khokon were, among others, present.
After paying homage, Mirza Fakhrul distributed iftar items among the poor in Tejgaon’s Arjat Para arranged by the local unit of BNP, marking the day.
The party used to distribute foods among the poorer people in Dhaka and everywhere in the country with participation of Khaleda Zia.
But their party chief landed in jail last year.
