Catch the godfathers to stop drug business

IT seems drug dealers never run out of options to dodge law enforcers. Previously, they tried to carry Yaba pills inside snake baskets, brinjals, gourds, jackfruits, books, laptops, wall clocks, I-phones and the rectums of human beings, among others. But this time, they have arranged a picnic to transport about 2.4 lakh Yaba pills from Teknaf to Dhaka and Jashore, and got busted on their way by RAB.
Members of RAB-7 recovered the pills from the picnic bus and arrested six people; all are residents of Jashore, from Karnaphuli Shah Amanat Bridge area in Chattogram on Saturday. The six arranged a picnic in Cox’s Bazar and invited some of their friends and relatives. They managed a bus, owned by one Atiar, and started their journey from Jashore with some 40 passengers on board on Wednesday.
On Thursday morning, all the group members boarded a St Martin’s Island-bound ship, but the six decided to stay in Teknaf to collect Yaba pills. However, they returned to Cox’s Bazar town with the rest in the evening. The six had concealed the Yaba inside the baggage of other passengers before their return trip on Friday night. During primary interrogation, the arrestees “admitted” that other passengers did not know anything about the illicit drug transport.
It is not unexpected for drug dealers to keep on trying for means to evade the law, as this occasion shows. Rather it is quite usual for them to try to find out new and innovative ways to keep their smuggling routes open. The fact that the drug runners were caught speaks volumes about the quality of intelligence received by our security forces. Definitely the level of intelligence gathered is of superior quality, which proves once again how important it is to get the real masterminds behind bars and not just the mules, those unfortunates who only carry the items.
If the scale and frequency of such busts continue and if the real godfathers are removed from the stage it will not be too difficult to herald a day where Bangladesh will be, for all intents and purposes, drug free. Success depends upon the law enforcers’ sincerity and the will of the administration.
