15 cops face action in Cox’s Bazar

Punitive action was taken against some 15 policemen of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station over Friday’s firing on the ruling party men.
Of them, 11 policemen, including an assistant sub-inspector, were suspended while four others, including three sub-inspectors, closed to the district police lines over the firing incident.
Confirming the incident, additional police super of Cox’s Bazar Tofail Ahmed on Sunday said a probe committee, headed by Additional District Magistrate
SM Shah Habibur Rahman Hakim, has also been formed to look into the matter.
The suspended policemen are ASI Uttam Kumar Dey, constables Sujan Kanti Nath, Mohammad Shamimul Ehsan, Nurul Alam, Abul Kalam Azad, Abdur Rauf, Russel Bhuiya, Hasan Sharif, Salauddin Mollah, Mithun Das and Kamrul Islam.
The closed policemen are SIs Mostafa Kamal, Tajul Islam and Al Amin and constable Sazzadul Islam.
Meanwhile, local Awami League leaders at a press briefing on Sunday demanded forming an inquiry committee by the Home Ministry.
Earlier, at least 20 people, including the president of municipality unit of Awami League, were injured in a clash with police in front of Sadar Police Station in the town on Friday evening.
Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Model Police Station Mahfuzur Rahman said police detained Azad, president of Cox’s Bazar ward-2 unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, around 6pm for checking out his bike documents.
As the news spread around, local leaders and activists and AL and BCL encircled the police station demanding Azad’s immediate release.
At one stage, police charged baton to disperse the unruly AL men which triggered a clash in the area. Police later fired several gunshots injuring 20 people.
