Vegetables’ price soar in Sylhet

The prices of vegetables have soared in all the kitchen markets of Sylhet city, affecting the people of fixed and low-income people.
Eggplant, lemon, tomato, bottle-gourd and other vegetables are also selling at exorbitant prices putting heavy strain on the budget of the low-income people in the district during the holy month of Ramadan.
The vegetables are being sold at the rates almost double the price last few days, market sources said.
Vegetable seller Kamal Miah of LalBazar in the city said they have to charge higher prices as they had to buy those at high prices.
The traders of the city attributed the high prices of different kinds of vegetables due to their low supply and high demand in the markets.
In the last Ramadan, the vegetables produced in different districts were transported to Dhaka and other major cities after meeting local demand.
But the farmers in the district have produced vegetable insufficiently which hardly could meet the local the demand.
They have lost interest in cultivation of vegetable as they could not recoup the production cost in the previous years.
In a recent visit of Bandar bazaar, Boro bazaar and Kalighat bazar, Shibgonj kitchen markets, the biggest kitchen markets of the district city, this correspondent found that vegetables are being sold at high prices.
Eggplant is being sold at Tk 60 to Tk70 per kg, four lemons are being sold at Tk 30 to Tk50, carrot at Tk 80 to Tk90 per kg, bitter-gourd was selling at Tk 60 to Tk70 per kg and beans at Tk 50 to Tk60 per kg. Bottle-gourd was selling at Tk 50 to Tk60 pieces, four green bananas at Tk35 to Tk45.
A dozen of egg is being sold at Tk 80 to Tk90, onion Tk 30 to Tk35 per kg, green chili Tk 90 to Tk100 per kg, tomato at Tk 80 to Tk100 per kg, snake-gourd at Tk 50 to Tk.60 per kg.
