UNB, Dhaka :
Treasury bench MP Suranjit Sengupta on Thursday in Parliament came down heavily on Finance Minister AMA Muhith for staying abroad at a time when the budget session is going on.
Taking part in general discussion on the proposed budget for the coming fiscal year, he said, “I’ve no knowledge whether any Finance Minister went abroad after announcing the budget… I don’t know how to defend it.” The Finance Minister went to Jeddah on June 23 to attend the annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB).
Suranjit urged the Speaker to ensure the presence of the Finance Minister in Parliament soon.
The senior Awami League leader also blasted planning minister AHM Mostafa Kamal and State Minister for Finance for the absence in the budget session and added that they are also absent after the budget announcement. “We expect their presence in parliament.”
About siphoning off money, the ruling MP suggested the Finance Minister to bring back that creating an investment-friendly environment in the country.
“Money is being siphon off… stop it immediately. Amend the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, if you think it is not enough,” Suranjit told the House.
He noted that the UNDP has claimed that the country lost on average $800 million annually in the capital flight over the last four decades. Pointing at BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, the veteran politician said Khaleda made a mistake by not joining the 10th parliamentary election and she must pay for it.
Khaleda now calls for inclusive politics, inclusive elections and inclusive dialogue after gathering knowledge from the westerners. “But dialogue cannot be inclusive keeping politics exclusive,” Suranjit said.
