Week-long measles immunisation prog begins in Sitakunda

A week-long measles immunisation programme has started on Saturday morning in Sitakunda upazila aiming to avoid further from measles virus breakout following 10 children’s death after suffering from the disease here.
Under the programme, initiated by Directorate General of Health Services, at least 46,145 children of the upazila will receive the measles vaccine, Civil Surgeon of the district Azizur Rahman Siddique told UNB. Children, aged between 6 months and 15 years, are taking the vaccine at 15 educational institutions in three unions – Sonaitori, Kumira and Sitakuda Sadar – since morning, he added.
The vaccine will be given in all educational institutions of the upazila gradually till Thursday. Guardians have been requested to take their kids to the nearby educational institutions to receive measles vaccine, the Civil Surgeon, who was on way to Sitakunda, also said.
Siddique also said the immunisation programme has been taken to avoid further from measles virus breakout in the area following death of 10 children suffering from measles virus and more than 100 others infected with the virus.
Earlier on Friday, eleven more children from hilly Tripurapara in Sitakunda upazila of the district were admitted to Fouzdarhat Infectious Diseases Hospital with high fever. On information, a special team of physicians reached Tripurapara to observe the situation and provide necessary medical services to the measles-afflicted, the Civil Surgeon added.
