Chittagong Bureau :
Chairman of National Board of Revenue (NBR Md Nazibur Rahman held a meeting with the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), Chittagong Custom House and trade body leaders on Saturday vows to open the customs activities round the clock to ease the port operation to avoid any ship congestion . The meeting was held to ease the prevailing container congestion at Chittagong Port.
Chittagong Port, the prime sea port of the country is facing problems in clearing imported containers, particularly those imported by single importers, for the last three months because of strained handling facility at the country’s port.
As a result, severe congestion of the containers is hampering the regular operational activities of the Chittagong sea port now, sources said. Sources said, the congestion has led to disruption in the overall container handling operation of the port, which accounts for more than 90 percent of the country’s international trade.
Custom Commissioner A F M Abdullah chaired the meeting while secretary of Shipping Ministry Ashok Madhob Roy, trade body leaders and stake holders attended.
Addressing the meeting, the Chairman of NBR Mohammed Najibur Rahman said, “Chittagong port and Chittagong Custom House ready to be opened for 24 hours for helping the business community.”
Chairman of the CPA Rear Admiral M Khaled Iqbal told the meeting, “CPA has taken some emergency measures to ease the existing congestion at the port”
He also hoped that the existing backlog of ships at the outer anchorage of the country’s prime seaport Chittagong would ease by this week. M Khaled Iqbal also said, the port has a capacity to deliver 4,000 TEUs containers daily but it receives only clearing requests for up to 2,800 TEUs containers from users. He said CPA had also taken initiatives to set up new instruments and modernize the existing ones so they could handle loading and unloading of more ships at a time at the port.
According to sources, Chittagong sea port has been facing huge vessel congestion recently, delaying berthing schedules to many ships waiting at the outer anchorage. Stakeholders attribute the congestion largely to the lack of adequate infrastructure at the port.
Mahbubul Alam, President of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), said that proper cargo vehicles management, maintaining berth time and serial of lighter vessels and round the clock unloading would reduce the ship congregation.
However, the Chairman of CPA Rear Admiral M Khaled Iqbal said, “the port is now handling 16 to 17 cargoes in every hour so the congestion eases soon. To enhance the port’s dynamism and efficiency, we have taken short, mid and long term plans in line with the Seventh Five-year Plan, Vision 2021 and 2041.”
