Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya on Wednesday said he also wants the trial of those involved in the Narayanganj seven murders, and offered his assistance in this connection.
“I also want the trial of the offenders, no matter who they are, and I’ll extend help if my cooperation is sought,” the embattled minister said in response to a query by journalists that the names of some of his family members are coming in the media that they were involved in the gruesome murders.
Maya came up with the remarks at a simple ceremony at his ministry where Saudi Ambassador in Dhaka Abdullah bin Nasser Al Basiri handed over 150 metric tonnes of Saudi dates provided by the Saudi government for distribution among the poor in Bangladesh during the upcoming Ramzan.
RAB officials Lt Col Tarek Syed Mahmud, son-in-law of Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, and Maj Arif Hossain and Lt Commander MM Rana of RAB-11 have been sent on forced retirement following the allegations of their involvement in the killing of seven people, including Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarker.
Besides, some media reported that Maya’s son Dipu Chowdhury brokered the deal between suspected RAB members and the masterminds of the tragedy. An amount of Tk 6 crore was said to have been transacted to carry out the abduction and subsequent murders.
On April 27, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and his three associates and driver were abducted from Fatullah area in Narayanganj city. Hours into their abduction, senior lawyer of the Narayanganj District Judge’s Court, Chandan Kumar Sarker, and his driver were abducted while they were going to capital Dhaka.
