Following the strike of a section of lighter vessel workers union , deadlock s in loading, unloading of cargos is prevailing .Sources said about 15 lakh tons of cargos with 30 mother vessels remained idle in outer berths of the port.
Earlier report adds: A faction of the Bangladesh Lighter Vessel Sramik Union enforced indefinite strike from Saturday morning to press home their demands of increased salary as declared by the govt . Due to workers strike, the loading , unloading in five river ghats remained suspended.
It is learnt from the local sources that a conflict over the strike arose among the workers and hence, a faction is complying the strike and the other continuing their activities.
General Secretary of the Sramik Union Syed Shahdat Hossain told that govt have published gazette for increasing the salary of lighter workers in October last year and the vessel owners were supposed to increase the salaries from December 15 last but their commitment yet to be implemented .
Mentionable that on plea of salary increasing of the workers, the vessel owners increased the lighters rent .
Due to strike of the workers, the loading unloading in mother vessels at outer berths partially hampered, sources said.
General secretary of another faction of the sramik union Nabi Alam said following the assurances of the lighter vessel owners of paying their arrears of the increased salary by next one week , the strike suspended upto February 20 next.
