PM likely to visit Delhi in 3rd week of Dec

UNB, Dhaka :
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is likely to take a three-day bilateral visit to New Delhi in the third week of December as officials from both sides are now in discussions on a new set of dates instead of initially planned December 3-4.
Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque and his Indian counterpart Dr S Jaishankar had a meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday and discussed various aspects of the important visit, a senior official at the
Foreign Ministry told UNB. The official said both Bangladesh and India will soon formally announce the visit officially.
Contacted, another official in Dhaka said the visit might take place on December 18-20.
Once things are finalised, the Prime Minister will leave for New Delhi on December 18 and will return home on December 20. Water issues, particularly Teesta water sharing, will remain high on the agenda though any ‘breakthrough’ in that front depends on Indian government, a diplomatic source said.
A number of bilateral documents are likely to be signed during the visit and both Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi will discuss the whole range of bilateral issues.
Earlier, on October 27, Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said Bangladesh expects a positive outcome on the long pending Teesta water sharing deal with India during Prime Minister’s forthcoming bilateral visit to New Delhi in December. Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla also had a lengthy meeting with Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque at the latter’ s office last month and discussed various bilateral issues, including the forthcoming visit.
An official, however, said Teesta is ‘not a precondition’ for the upcoming visit but Bangladesh remains ‘hopeful’ that Teesta issue will be resolved timely. On October 16, Hasina and her Indian counterpart Modi had a bilateral meeting in Goa reassuring that Bangladesh and India will remain together for the sake of development. At the invitation of Prime Minister Hasina, Modi visited Bangladesh from June 6-7 in 2015 the two countries came up with a joint declaration ‘Notun Projonmo – Nayi Disha’.
