7 killed in Mymensingh Bus-CNG collision


Seven people were killed in a head-on collision between a bus and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Mymensingh city on Friday afternoon.
The accident occurred around 1:30pm in the Gondropa area of Akua Bypass Road. All seven victims were passengers of the CNG-run auto-rickshaw, according to police.
Police and local sources said a Rajib Paribahan bus was travelling from Jamalpur towards Dhaka when it collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw travelling in the opposite direction towards Muktagachha.
The auto-rickshaw was completely mangled in the collision, leaving its passengers critically injured. Several victims died on the spot, while the death toll later rose to seven.
Police and rescue personnel rushed to the scene after receiving the and launched rescue operations. Traffic on the road was disrupted for about an hour as a large number of people gathered at the scene.
Additional Police Superintendent of Mymensingh Abdullah Al Mamun and officers from Kotwali Model Police Station visited the spot and took steps to restore traffic movement.
Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Model Police Station Mohammad Shibirul Islam confirmed that seven people were killed in the accident.
He said four of the victims were identified as Mofazzal Hossain Lebu, 50; his mother Rashida Begum, 70; his daughter Morjina, 25; and Morjina’s son Minal, 5. They were residents of Dari Hamidpur village in the Nandina area of Jamalpur Sadar upazila.
The bodies were sent to the morgue of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for autopsies. The bodies will be handed over to the families after completion of the necessary legal procedures, the OC said.
Efforts were underway to identify the remaining three victims, he added.
The accident sparked anger among local residents, who demanded measures to curb reckless driving by buses on the highway. Police seized both the bus and the CNG-run auto-rickshaw involved in the collision.
Traffic on Akua Bypass Road returned to normal about an hour after the accident.
