Strict enforcement of Consumers’ Rights Protection Act stressed

Creating adequate social awareness along with strict enforcement of the Consumers’ Rights Protection Act (CRPA) 2009 and regular market monitoring could save the common people from health hazards.
The observations came at a seminar on “Creating awareness through more publicity on the Consumers’ Rights Protection Act, 2009′ held at conference room of the Deputy Commissioner in the city on Thursday.
The district administration jointly with Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) organised the seminar presided over by Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Dr ATM Mahbubul Karim.
Officials of the departments concerned, agriculturists, representatives of Rangpur Chamber, Rangpur Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RWCCI) and NGOs, civil society members and journalists participated.
Deputy Commissioner Rahat Anwar and Deputy Director of Rangpur divisional office of the DNCRP Khondker Md Nurul Amin addressed the seminar as the chief and special guests respectively.
Secretary of Rangpur unit of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Shah Md Nabiullah Panna, District Fisheries Officer Dr Zillur Rahman, President of RWCCI Anwara Ferdousi Poly, addressed, among others.
Assistant Director of DNCRP for Rangpur Afsana Parveen delivered power point presentation narrating importance of the CRPA and its various aspects with suggestions for its proper implementation to protect rights of the consumers.
In the open discussion session, the participants called for creating mass public awareness for strict enforcement of the CRPA to protect the consumers’ rights for saving public health from food poisoning, other contamination and hazards.
They put emphasis on considering severity of conducting false advertisements by some companies or business establishments for selling products to lure and cheat the common consumers and asked for taking stern legal actions to uphold public interests.
The chief guest stressed on creating awareness among consumers and businesspersons through conducting motivational activities and more publicity on the CRPA for its proper enforcement to stop supply of adulterated and poisonous foods to the local markets.
