Chittagong Test : Day 2: Tigers trail by 72 runs against England

Bangladesh trailed by 72 runs with five-wicket in hand in the 1st innings against England after the second day in the 1st Test at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong on Friday.
Opener Tamim Iqbal produced a gritty innings of 78 while skipper Mushfiqur Rahim added 48 denying England attacks to set the Tigers tempo for a figure of 221/5 in 74 overs, at stumps.
All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was batting on 31 while night-watchman Shafiul Islam at crease without any collection to resume the Bangladesh 1st innings on the 3rd day.
Tamim bedded in for a worthy innings of 179-ball, including seven boundaries, to give the Tigers’ a breath taking space in the middle, after a nerve-shuttering top-order batting collapse for 29/2 in 13.5 overs, before lunch when Tamim was at crease with 7.
Coming at 119/3 in 43.2 overs in the number five position skipper Mushfiqur Rahim fell short of tow-run for a half century off 77-ball, including six boundaries, as he was caught by keeper Jonny Bairstow.
Departing Mushfiqur at 221/5 in 71.3 overs, Ben Stokes, a fast bowler showed the exit way to the right-hand batsman for the first time in two days’.
Opening bat on day-2, Bangladesh lost two top-order batsmen — Imrul Kayes and genuine Test batsman Mominul Haque — within a span of four balls by the visitors’ off-break spinner Moeen Ali. Conceding no run, Ali bowled out Kayes in his 2nd delivery while departed Mominul in the 5th ball of his very 1st over.
Then the next 29.3 overs were played by 3rd pair between Tamim and Mahmudullah for their steadfast figure of 90 that sail the team total to decent level of 119/3 in 43.2 overs, overcoming struggling state.
England’s spin-power once again bite back to keep their noses up departing Mahmudullah from 3rd, right on the stroke of tea break. Mahmudullah faced 66-ball for scoring 38, involving three boundaries.
Legbreak Adil Rashid delivered on the brink of the break and Mahmudullah connected the pushing-away-ball that took a clear low-turn straight to slip where Ben Stokes ready to catch him.
Tamim’s innings progressed fluently so far for the next 11.2 overs in the 4th stand with skipper Mushfiqur Rahim for another partnership figure of 44.
Tamim’s guts finished at 163/4 in 54.4 overs as he was caught by keeper Jonny Bairstow off Gareth Batty’s bowling.
Mushfiqur stayed with Shakib in the 5th for a figure of 58 in 16.5 overs.
Moeen Ali bagged two wickets for 66 while Ben Stokes, Adil Rashid and Gareth Batty took one wicket each for 17, 51 and 51 runs respectively.
Earlier, in the day’s play, England resumed the 1st innings on the 2nd day with overnight score of 258/7 in 92 overs and played 13.5 more overs for their innings collection 293/10 in 105.5 overs.
With the day’s very first delivery, spinner Taijul Islam made the breakthrough on day-2 keeping the visitors on their previous figure as he took overnight batsman Chris Woakes, sending him with overnight collection of 36. Woakes was caught by Mominul Haque at 258/8 in 92.1 overs.
Taijul again hampered the England batting line at 289/9 in 100.3 overs departing another overnight batsman Adil Rashid (26 off 54b; 3×4), was caught debut Sabbir Rahman. Taijul bagged two for 47 runs in 24 overs.
Hero on debut, Miraz dismissed the last one Stuart Broad (13 off 37b; 2×4), was caught by skipper Mushfiqur Rahim, to fill his quota of 6/80 in 39.5 overs that felt heavier to the English batters.
