AL MP Hiron passes away

Awami League MP from Barisal-5 constituency Shawkat Hossain Hiron died at Apollo Hospitals in the capital on Wednesday morning. He was 57.Hiron, who had been undergoing treatment at the hospital, was declared dead at about 7:00am, said Shahidul Islam Shahid, a duty manager at the hospital. Hiron, also a former mayor of Barisal City Corporation, was admitted to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on March 24 after he had suffered a brain stroke. He was later brought back home on April 4, said Litu, a close friend of Hiron.He was then admitted to Apollo Hospitals and kept in its Intensive Care Unit as his health conditions deteriorated.Hiron is survived by wife, one son and one daughter, and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death.Meanwhile, the first namaj-e-janaza of Hiron was held at the south plaza of Jatiya Sangsad. Cabinet members, members of parliament, leaders of different political parties and business bodies, and people from all walks of life joined the namaz-e-janaza.After the janaza, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina placed wreaths on the coffin of Hiron. On behalf of President Abdul Hamid, his military secretary Maj Gen Abul Hossain placed wreaths on his coffin.His body will be taken to his hometown Barisal on Thursday by a helicopter. The body will be kept in the city’s Bangabandhu Udyan at 2 pm so that people can show their last respect to him.His second namaj-e-janaza will be held on Friday at 11 am at the Awami League office in the city. The third namaj-e-janaza will be held at Bangabandhu Udyan at 2.30 pm. Later, he will be buried at Muslim Graveyard.Meanwhile, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of Shawkat Hossain Hiron.In a condolence message, President Hamid said Hiron had played a great role in the development of Barisal, and his affection for the people of Barisal will ever be remembered.In a separate message, the Prime Minister said Hiron had turned Barisal, a city which had been neglected for a long time, into a ‘Venice of the East’ through his relentless efforts.
