Helpless people taking law into their hands
THE NEW NATION on Friday reported that eight robbers were lynched to death by a mob when they were stealing rice sacks from a shop of a local market at Araihazar on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in the early hours of Thursday. The robbers were killed when villagers awaken by calls from loudspeakers of local mosques chased them as they were loading a truck with rice sacks from the shop. Some people going to Fazr prayers saw the incident and alerted the sleeping people.
It can’t be the overview of a civilized society but keeping social peace is the responsibility of the government in power. But crimes and lack of control of crimes are only engulfing the nation. As per statistics of human rights body ‘Ain O Salish Kendra’ a total of 104 people were lynched by mob between January and September this year alone. The figures were at least 127 for 2014, 128 in 2013 and 126 in 2012.
We cannot accept for a civilized and secure living that citizens will be helpless in the hands of the criminals and law-breakers. What is known, but kept hidden from the government, is the truth that most criminals have joined politics for political protection. If those who could not join politics and small criminals who have no difficulty in getting support from those who can give them protection, such criminalization of society could not happen. We have also middleman in the criminal activities. If not robbery or outright stealing people’s money and property, many have to bribe the officials also to get anything done. Where police are busy with politicians in power and their political opponents, police cannot be much of a help against the criminals.
