1,179 mw electricity generation by Dec this year

BSS, Dhaka :As a result of government’s relentless efforts for reaching electricity to every corner of the country, the daily power generation would reach 1,179 megawatt (MW) by December this year. “The government has achieved a considerable success in the power sector in the last couple of years through increasing the electricity generation capacity to 14,077-MW from 3,268-MW in 2009,” an official of power, energy and mineral resources ministry told BSS on Friday. He said the Awami League government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has a target to generate 24,000-MW electricity by 2021. Ministry sources said the national grid would get 108-MW from Basila, Keraniganj plants of CLC Power Company Ltd, 55-MW from Nababganj plant of Dhaka Southern Power Generations Ltd, 225-MW from Ashuganj Combined Cycle Power Plant, 341-MW from Bibyana-2 Combined Cycle IPP Power Plant by December 2015 and another 450-MW from Ashuganj Combined Cycle Power plant (South) by November. Project director of Ashuganj Combined Cycle Power Plant (South) MA Samad said the country experienced a record 8,177-MW power generation in August, 2015. The country is now importing 500-MW power from India while talks are on for importing electricity from Nepal and Bhutan under sub-regional cooperation. The government has undertaken a number of projects to generate 17,000-MW electricity by 2016.Energy and Mineral Resources Division Secretary Abubakar Siddique said the government has given top priority to the development of the sector considering its importance in the overall development of the country. “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government has a target to generate electricity by using 53 per cent coal as primary energy within 2021,” he said. The secretary said the government has also undertaken a number of coal-based power plants having capacity of generating 10,000-MW electricity.
