A New Nation Report :
When Dutch-Bangla was launched some nineteen years ago, no one knew that it going to set an unbreakable world record. It was also not possible for anyone to know that this bank would (as it is doi9ng now) the greatest contribution in the progress and prosperity of Bangladesh.
What Dutch-Bangla Bank is doing for Bangladesh is unique because anywhere else in the world no other bank does anything so important for the progress and prosperity of a nation spending incredibly fabulous sums of money as a matter of CSR (corporate social responsibility) activity.
Beginning in 2011, DBBL has been spending annually Taka 1.02 million in the education sector in Bangladesh awarding 3,000 students in Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and graduation levels. In fact, no country can progress and prosper unless the citizens of the country are educated as education is the backbone of a nation.
Some people argue that DBBL’s contribution towards CSR activities is just peanuts compared to many banks in western countries including the USA. But they are mistaken because many banks in western countries may spend fabulous sums of money towards CSR activities, but none of those have to spend fabulous sums of money towards development of education of students because the governments of advanced counties themselves spend huge sums of money towards development of education. Banks do not have to spend money for educational development.
Some other critics may argue if following suit some other banks come forward with 1.5 billion, 1.7 billion or even two billion Taka worth of CSR activities in education sector, DBBL will go to second, third or fourth position. They are also mistaken because DBBL’s position will remain first in respect of coming forward offering highest amount of funds in educational development. Rather, other banks that may come forward with bigger funds in CSR activities in educational developments will be second, third or fourth respectively.
At the moment, there are fifty-six local and foreign commercial banks operating in Bangladesh. All the local and foreign commercial banks earning hundreds of crores of Taka of annual profits have CSR activities. If, at least, the local commercial banks come forward to include educational development in their CSR activities contributing Taka five crore towards educational development annually Bangladesh’s face would change to be brighter. If the name of M. Sahabuddin is not mentioned, this write-up will remain incomplete because it is he who has founded the unbreakable world-record setting Dutch-Bangla Bank that has been making great contribution towards progress and prosperity of Bangladesh.
