Staff Reporter :

The High Court (HC) has directed the Election Commission to immediately register the Amar Bangladesh Party (AB Party) as an official political party.

The order came following the final hearing of a writ petition, with the HC bench comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque delivering the ruling on Monday.

The Election Commission had previously rejected the AB Party’s application for registration on July 24 of the previous year.

In response, the party’s convener, AFM Solaiman Chowdhury, filed a writ petition on August 23. Following a preliminary hearing on August 31, the court issued a rule asking why the AB Party should not be granted registration as a political party.

The Chief Election Commissioner, along with the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of the Election Commission, were instructed to respond to the rule.

After the final hearing, the High Court declared the rule absolute, thus mandating the party’s registration.

The writ was argued by lawyer Tajul Islam, who also serves as the joint convener of the AB Party. Lawyers Abdullah Al Mamun and Zobair Ahmed Bhuiyan also represented the party in court.
