Fakhrul urges ‘complete justice’ in Hasina case
Staff Reporter :
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday called on the authorities to ensure complete and impartial justice as the International Crimes Tribunal prepares to hand down its verdict on Monday in the case against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and two others.
In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page, Fakhrul wrote, “The International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh is set to deliver its verdict today in the case against Sheikh Hasina, who has been charged with five counts of crimes against humanity for the violence and repression that unfolded in Dhaka last year.”
“We demand true justice. The nation deserves a trial that is transparent and fair,” he added.
Speaking earlier at a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club, the BNP leader urged citizens and political groups to remain vigilant against what he claimed were “vested interests” attempting to trigger unrest ahead of Monday’s verdict in the case accusing “fascist Sheikh Hasina of genocide.”
“The verdict in the trial concerning the genocide committed by fascist Hasina will be announced tomorrow. As a result, deep uncertainty and widespread anxiety have gripped the country,” Fakhrul said.
He warned that certain groups are seeking to exploit the tense atmosphere to plunge Bangladesh back into disorder. “We must stay resolute and stop them,” he urged.
Fakhrul also said that the people-especially the student community-have opened a window of opportunity for restoring democracy and citizens’ rights. “We cannot afford to squander this moment. We must work to smooth the path toward a democratic transition.”
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) is scheduled to announce its verdict on Monday in the case against the deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her two senior aides, who are facing five charges of alleged crimes against humanity linked to last year’s deadly student-led uprising in Dhaka during July-August.
