A BNP leader, Biru Mollah, was shot dead in Ishwardi over a dispute related to soil cutting for a brick kiln. The incident took place on Wednesday in a village under Laxmikunda Union.
Rajib, son of the deceased Biru Mollah and an eyewitness, said that on Tuesday night Jahurul Mollah and his son Al Amin Mollah forcibly cut soil from Biru Mollah’s land for use in a brick kiln. When Biru Mollah went to ask Jahurul Mollah about the matter around 9:30 am on Wednesday, Jahurul became enraged. At one stage, Jahurul Mollah and his son Al Amin Mollah shot Biru Mollah in the head with an illegal firearm.
After being shot, Biru Mollah collapsed on the ground. Local people rescued him and rushed him to Ishwardi Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physician, Tasnim Tamanna Swarna, declared him dead.
Local sources said that the deceased Biru Mollah and the accused Jahurul Mollah were paternal cousins. Former member secretary of Ishwardi Upazila BNP, Ajmal Hossain Sujon, said,”One of our party leaders has been brutally murdered. We demand the immediate arrest of those responsible and that they be brought to justice.
This was not a political conflict; the incident occurred due to a family dispute.”
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ishwardi Police Station, Mominuzzaman, said,
“After receiving information that a BNP leader named Biru Mollah had been killed, we went to the spot. The incident is under investigation, and necessary legal action will be taken against those involved.”
