Delwar Hossain and Selina Hossain of Kewa Purva Khand village of Sreepur Municipal area of Gazipur planted tulip flowers in 2020 for the first time in the country . In continuation of this, 70 thousand tulips of 12 varieties have bloomed in a big garden next to his house. Just a play of spring colorful flowers across a wide area. This is like a piece of the Netherlands in the heart of the country.
Tulip flowers are widely produced in the Netherlands. There is an industry based on tulips. So the country celebrates tulip festival every year. And the national flower of Turkey is the tulip. Tulips of various colors spread fascination around, the mind is filled with seeing. Tulip production is high in colder countries. This tulip blooms in the main cold countries including Kashmir, Leatherland, Turkey in India. Tulips were not seen in Bangladesh. But now no one has to go abroad to see tulips! If you want, you can visit the tulip state in the country.
Although Bangladesh is not in a good position in the list of flower production in the world, the production of tulip flowers in the country has surprised in recent times. In this country of six seasons, there has been great success in winter spring tulip cultivation. This cultivation is constantly expanding all over the country, commercial production has also started.
Delwar Hossain was the first to cultivate tulip flowers in Bangladesh. He said that after transplanting the bulbs on January 9, the flowers bloomed after 21 days by January 30. The couple has been involved in the flower business for 15 years. At that time, ministers, secretaries, parliamentarians of different levels of the government and prominent people of the country came to visit the garden. A diplomat working in Bangladesh, the capital of tulips, Netherlands, came to visit the garden to see the production of tulips in the environment of Bangladesh. Before this, they were commercially cultivating various types of flowers including roses, gerberas, lilies. Moumita also established a flower farming company called Flowers. Apart from flowers under this organization, their project included strawberry and G nine banana cultivation on a large scale. Apart from producing flowers and fruits, they also provide their seeds locally to the farmers and show the technical way.
In the first year, their tulip garden was only 2 percent of the area. This year they have successfully cultivated more than 70 thousand tulip flowers in one bigha of land. 25 women and men are working in this project of tulips and other flowers and fruits. Every year they import tulip flower bulbs from the Netherlands.
Selina Hossain, another woman entrepreneur of the garden, said that the tulip flower plants are up to 28 inches long. They are ideal flowers for arranging tubs. Only one flower is obtained from each plant. There are more than 150 varieties of tulips in the world. The most successful country in tulip cultivation is the Netherlands. There is extensive cultivation of this flower. At present, apart from the Netherlands, tulips are being cultivated in several other temperate countries.
He also said that they have researched tulip flower cultivation in the environment of Bangladesh for several years. Then in 2020 he saw success in experimental cultivation of tulips. Later in 2021, 2022 and lastly in 2023, they gradually increased the cultivation area of the flower. This year they have completely entered into commercial production. In addition to selling flowers cut from the garden, this year Pot is also selling tulips. The price of these pots with three to five tulip plants is between Tk 300 to Tk 600.
Delwar Hossain said, Netherlands is now exporting tulip flowers. If we try, we can produce this flower on a large scale and write our name in the export book. Delwar said that this year he has supplied tulip bulbs in some areas of Panchagarh, Jessore, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Bagerhat, Rangpur and Jamalpur. He regularly provides technical support in these gardens. His hope is that one day tulips will take place in the courtyards of flower lovers in Bangladesh.
Florists and traders from different parts of the country come every day to see Delwar’s tulip garden. One of them, Kamrul Hasan, came from Phulbari area of Mymensingh. He said that tulip is currently the most popular flower in Bangladesh. If its cultivation is widespread, the revolution of Bangladesh can happen. Approached Delwar to discuss his tulit cultivation method. Bulbul Hasan, a flower grower, came from Narsingdi. He said, I have been selling various types of plants including flowers and fruits for a long time. Many customers come to our nursery to look for tulip flower seedlings due to the news of tulip planting in Sreepur. So I am trying to buy and sell some tulip seedlings.
Assurance of support from the Netherlands: The Head of Mission of Bangladesh High Commission of the Netherlands, Thijs Woodstra, came to visit the tulip garden. He was excited to see the garden. At this time, he thanked this flower farming couple by telling about the potential of tulips in Bangladesh. He said, tulip will increase the beauty of Bangladesh. This tulip has a wide market in the Netherlands and Europe. Men and women of Bangladesh cultivate tulips, they can become self-sufficient and create a market with tulips. The Netherlands will cooperate in tulip cultivation in Bangladesh.
