3 held over Mithamoin tourist boat robbery

Police have arrested three alleged members of a robbery gang and recovered weapons and other items used in connection with the robbery of a passenger boat in Mithamoin Haor of Kishoreganj.

Kishoreganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Mizanur Rahman disclosed the information at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, on June 15, Ichanul Haque alias Ehsanul Haque Fakir was arrested from Savar, while Md. Julhas Uddin was arrested from the Kamrangirchar area of Dhaka.

Later, based on information provided by the two suspects, police conducted a raid in the Mithamoin area and arrested another alleged gang member, Rubel Mia, the same night.

During the operation, police recovered an engine-powered boat, five mobile phones, one ramda, several iron rods, and 20 small and large spears allegedly used in the robbery.

According to the investigation, a boat carrying around 20 to 22 passengers left the Mithamoin boat terminal for Balikhla Ghat in Karimganj on the evening of June 7. Due to adverse weather conditions, the vessel temporarily halted near the southern side of Hasanpur Bridge.

When the boat resumed its journey, a group of 10 to 12 robbers arrived in an engine-powered boat at around 7:45 pm and allegedly robbed the passengers.
Following the incident, a case was filed with Mithamoin Police Station, and police launched an investigation.

The SP said the arrested individuals have multiple previous cases against them involving theft, narcotics, and other criminal offences.

“In addition to legal action, the process of producing the accused before the court is underway,” he said.

Mizanur Rahman added that police remain committed to protecting the lives and property of the public and that such operations will continue under the force’s “zero-tolerance” policy against crime.
