A Dhaka court has issued arrest warrants against 22 students of Dhaka University (DU) in connection with the murder of 35-year-old Tofazzal Hossain at Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall in September 2024.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jewel Rana passed the order after accepting the supplementary charge sheet submitted in the case, a court official confirmed.

The students against whom warrants were issued are Firoz Kabir, Abdus Samad, Sakib Raihan, Yeasin Ali Gain, Yamuzzaman Yam, Fazle Rabbi, Shahriar Kabir Shovon, Mehedi Hasan Imran, Ratul Hasan, Sultan Mia, Nasir Uddin, Mobasser Billah, Shishir Ahmed, Mohosin Uddin Shafi, Abdullahil Kafi, Sheikh Ramzan Ali Raky, Rashed Kamal Anik, Moniruzzaman Sohag, Abu Raihan, Redwanur Rahman Parvez, Rabbikul Riad and Ashraf Ali Munshi. All are currently absconding.

A total of 28 students were named in the charge sheet submitted by Investigation Officer Md Hannanul Islam, additional superintendent of police at the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), on 17 December 2025.

Of the 28 accused, Jalal Mia, Ahsan Ullah alias Bipul Sheikh, Al Hossain Sazzad, Mottakin Sakin Shah, Md Sumon Mia, and Wajibul Alam gave confessional statements after their arrest. Ahsan Ullah and Wajibul Alam have since been granted bail.

The incident reportedly began around 2:00 pm on 18 September 2024 during a cricket match at the hall field, when six mobile phones were allegedly stolen. Later that evening, Tofazzal arrived at the field during a football match and was suspected of involvement in the theft. According to the charge sheet, he was beaten by students, taken to the hall’s guest room, and extorted for Tk 35,000 from his family.

When his uncle, Abdur Rob Mia, refused to pay, the students allegedly attacked Tofazzal with a cricket stump and bamboo stick, leading to his death.

Relatives told media that Tofazzal had “lost his mind” following the deaths of his parents and brother and had been drifting. The case was filed the following day by Mohammad Amanullah, a supervisor at the DU estate office, at Shahbagh Police Station.

The PBI took over the investigation on 26 February 2025 in line with court directives.
