Uttara Mass Killing: ICT extends probe deadline to 23 Sept

Staff Reporter :

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has granted investigators two more months to complete their probe into the alleged Uttara mass killing during last year’s July uprising, setting 23 September as the new deadline for the final report.

The order came on Sunday from a three-member bench of Tribunal-1, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumdar.

Among those accused in the case is former Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam, along with nine other local Awami League leaders and activists.

Earlier in the day, nine of the ten accused were brought to the tribunal under heavy security.
Alongside former Mayor Atiqul Islam, the accused include Md Shahinur Mia, Education Secretary of Uttara East Thana Awami League; Md Bashir Uddin, President of Uttara Sector-6 Awami League; Delwar Hossain, President of Ward-1 Jubo League (Dhaka North); Monowar Islam Chowdhury, President of Uttara West Thana Awami League; and Abdullah Al Mamun, Organising Secretary of the Gazipur Metropolitan Awami League.

During Sunday’s hearing, Prosecutor Md Saimum Reza Talukder sought more time, arguing that additional investigation was needed to complete the complex probe.

Accepting the plea, the tribunal granted the extension and directed the investigators to submit the final report by 23 September.

The ICT had initially set 20 July as the submission date, following its earlier directive issued on 12 May this year.

The tribunal will review the progress of the investigation on the new date and decide the next steps in the high-profile case.
