Staff Reporter :

Election Commission (EC) Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said that the National Identity Card (NID) registration services should remain under the EC.

“We believe that NID services should remain under the EC. If there are any structural concerns beyond this, I do not have any additional information about the matter,” he said while responding to reporters at the Bangladesh Election Commission in the capital this afternoon.

EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed further explained, “We have been developing this system since 2007. We have the technical expertise, and we are providing the required services while also expanding them.”

He added, “Since this is an established system, it is more logical to expand the existing structure instead of creating a new one from scratch. This is what we have been reiterating.”

Asked whether NID data is secure under the EC, he responded, “A total of 182 organisations access data from the EC, along with other agencies. They do so because the data is secure.”

Regarding the sit-in program of EC officials and employees, the EC secretary said, “Those who participated in the human chain are our colleagues. From their perspective, their demand is valid.”

Asked whether the government officials can protest against a government decision, the EC secretary said, “We do not want anyone to face difficulties. However, if there is a delay in resolving the issue, there must be a valid reason for it.

Once that reason is addressed, there will be no further inconvenience.”
