NN Online:
Law enforcement officials have confirmed the safe recovery of five University of Chittagong (CU) students who were abducted in Khagrachhari nine days ago.
Khagrachhari Superintendent of Police Arefin Jewel reported that the students were rescued on Thursday afternoon. The news was also confirmed by Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP) President Nipon Tripura around 3pm.
According to a press release signed by Rebek Chakma, Information and Publicity Secretary of the University of Chittagong unit of PCP, the rescued individuals include PCP CU branch member Rishan Chakma, along with his friends Maitrimoy Chakma (Fine Arts), Dibby Chakma (Dramatics), Longi Mro (Zoology), and Aldrin Tripura (Fine Arts). They were reportedly released in phases.
The PCP expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to securing the students’ safe return.
The students were abducted at 6:30am on April 16 from the Giriful area of Khagrachhari Sadar Upazila while returning to Chattogram after celebrating the Biju festival. A driver accompanying them was also taken but later released.
Tensions remain as a faction of the PCP aligned with Santu Larma continues to accuse the rival hill political group UPDF of orchestrating the abduction—a claim the UPDF faction led by Prasit Khisa denies.
