Ganatantra Mancha, an alliance of several opposition parties, has condemned the government for allegedly turning Bangladesh into a ‘death valley’ by killing ‘several hundred’ students and civilians to quell protests.

At a protest rally held on Wednesday, Zonayed Saki, chief coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolon, criticised the government for its handling of the recent student protests.

He accused the authorities of attempting to deflect blame for the violence by attributing it to opposition parties in an effort to suppress the student quota movement.

“The entire country has now turned into a death valley. Several hundred students have been killed.

The government is struggling to cover up the numerous casualties and the lines of bodies. We observe that they are employing various political tactics to conceal the scale of the violence,” Saki stated.

Saki also addressed the government’s claims that Jamaat and Shibir should be banned due to their alleged involvement in the violence. He argued that 80 to 90 percent of the arrested students have no political affiliations, suggesting that the government’s claims are misleading.

“The government’s deception is now apparent, as it is arresting students without political identities. Their aim is to undermine genuine movements by falsely attributing the violence to others, just as they have done in the past,” he added.

Ganatantra Mancha had planned to hold a protest rally at the Purana Paltan intersection in Dhaka at 11:30 am on Wednesday.

The rally was intended to press various demands, including the resignation of the Awami League government. Amid a heavy police presence and the deployment of prison vans, leaders of Ganatantra Mancha staged a brief rally on the footpath in front of the Al Raji Complex in the Bijoynagar area on Wednesday.

Zonayed Saki, chief coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolon, condemned the police action, stating, “We had planned to hold a rally to protest the killing of our students and demand justice.

However, the police have cordoned off the Purana Paltan area, showing a complete disregard for law and order.

They have attempted to disrupt our rally through aggressive tactics and have confiscated our loudspeakers. We strongly condemn and protest against this police action.”

Saki called on the government to resign, emphasising that there is widespread demand for the administration’s departure from every corner of the country.

He announced that Ganatantra Mancha will reveal its next steps in a press conference scheduled for Thursday.

Saiful Haque, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Revolutionary Workers Party, criticised the government’s reliance on administrative support to sustain its position.

“The fate of the government hangs by a thread. If our law enforcement agencies simply carry out their professional duties, this government will find no way to escape,” Haque asserted.

He demanded that the government resign and transfer power to an interim administration to address the current political crisis.

“Otherwise,” Saiful warned, “the people of the country will express their pent-up anger and remove the government.”

The heavy police presence and the interruption of the planned rally by Ganatantra Mancha underscore the heightened tensions and the ongoing conflict between the opposition and the government.
