Vice Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, Prof Ali Riaz, on Sunday emphasized the urgent need for democratic forces to stay united in tackling the deep-rooted crises that Bangladesh has long been grappling with.
“Efforts are being made to address these longstanding crises, but implementing reform commission reports alone is not sufficient,” Prof Riaz said during a dialogue with Ganasamhati Andolon held in the morning. “We must establish a democratic state structure and cultivate a true democratic practice. For this, unity among democratic forces is crucial.”
A 10-member delegation from Ganasamhati Andolon, led by Chief Coordinator Zonayed Saki, took part in the discussion at the LD Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
Presiding over the session, Prof Riaz recalled that it was through the collective strength of the people that a fascist regime was overthrown. “Now, it is vital to maintain that unity and carry its spirit forward. This is not just a commitment—it is our responsibility,” he said.
He paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives, fought, or were injured during the July uprising, as well as those who resisted oppression over the 16 years leading up to it.
“We owe a debt to all who, over the past 53 years, have struggled to establish a democratic, accountable, and inclusive state that ensures the rights of all citizens,” he added.
Calling the ongoing reform dialogue a positive step, Prof Riaz noted that some progress has been made. “However, if we fail to preserve and advance this momentum, we risk losing these opportunities. Sustained collective effort is essential.”
He stressed that the goal is to build a democratic and accountable Bangladesh not just for today’s citizens but for future generations as well, expressing hope that a national charter could soon be drafted through broad political consensus.
Members of the Consensus Commission—Safar Raj Hossain, Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar, and Dr Iftekharuzzaman—also attended the discussion, which was moderated by Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Monir Haider.
