More than a thousand Bangladeshis have been deported from the US in last 13 years.
According to the US Homeland Security office at least 1,555 Bangladeshi nationals have been expelled for charges like murder, rape, different types of fraud and illegal immigration.
The US’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement department’s spokesperson Brandon Montgomery told bdnews24.comthat 275 of the deported Bangladeshis served different terms in prison on a slew of charges like bank and real-estate frauds.
According to the US authorities, 12 Bangladeshis, serving sentences in prisons, have been deported in the last three months.
Between October 2000 and September 2001, a total of 71 Bangladeshi nationals were expelled from US.
The US government had deported 1,472 Bangladeshis in the ten years between 2002 and 2012.
Quite a few Bangladeshi citizens are currently serving terms in different prisons including in New York, New Jersey, California, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Michigan, South Carolina and Colorado. Most of them are ‘Green Card’ holders but some do not have a work-permit.
After serving terms, most of them will be deported except the US citizens, according to the authorities.
Bangladeshi national Tarikul Haider Chowdhury has been recently indicted for violating immigration laws, but deportation was withheld as his children are US citizens by birth.
