James A. Stewart, political officer of the Bangladesh Embassy in Dhaka, paid a courtesy call on the leaders of Sylhet district and metropolitan areas of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. The meeting was held on Monday (December 1) afternoon at the Metropolitan Jamaat office in Kudrat Ullah Market, Bandar Bazar, in the city. The US Embassy official was accompanied by Md. Iqbal Mahmud, assistant political specialist of the embassy.
Jamaat leaders present included: Jamaat Central Working Committee Member and Sylhet Metropolitan Ameer Muhammad Fakhrul Islam, Central Majlish-e-Shura Member, District Ameer and Jamaat-nominated MP candidate for Sylhet-1 constituency (Metropolitan and Sadar) Maulana Habibur Rahman, Metropolitan Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr. Nurul Islam Babul, District Secretary and Jamaat-nominated MP candidate for Sylhet-4 constituency (Gowainghat, Jaintapur and Companiganj) Joynal Abedin, Metropolitan Assistant Secretary Jahedur Rahman Chowdhury, District Jamaat Women’s Department Secretary Professor Mahfuza Siddika, Metropolitan Women’s Department Secretary Fauzia Rahman Shiuli, Metropolitan Assistant Secretary Sahima Khanam Hepi and District Assistant Secretary Dr. Angura Begum, etc.
At this time, the US embassy official wanted to know about Jamaat’s preparations for the next election and future action plans if it comes to power. He was also informed about Jamaat’s views on various issues related to the interests of the two countries.
In this regard, Sylhet Metropolitan Jamaat Ameer Muhammad Fakhrul Islam said, a courtesy call was held with the US embassy official in a cordial atmosphere. On our part, we have highlighted the various political and humanitarian activities of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. We have informed about Jamaat’s role in various issues of state reform after the July uprising. We have highlighted Jamaat’s various steps to improve the quality of life of the marginalized population and preparations for the elections if Jamaat comes to power. In addition, there was a detailed discussion on continuing US support for free and fair elections.
