UCB elects chair, vice-chair, EC chair, 2 other committees

Business leader and entrepreneur Sharif Zahir has been unanimously elected as the chairman of United Commercial Bank PLC during the board meeting held on Thursday at the bank’s corporate office.

At the same board, young industrial entrepreneur Md. Tanvir Khan has been elected as the Executive Committee chairman of the bank, said a press release.

Meanwhile, Md. Shazzad Hossoin has been elected as the vice-chairman of the bank, and Md. Yusuf Ali has been appointed as the chairman of the risk management committee. In addition, Obaidur Rahman has been elected as the bank’s Audit Committee chairman.

Newly elected chairman Sharif Zahir is a pioneer in fostering corporate governance in the business and industry sectors. He has been honored with the prestigious commercially important person (CIP) award. Zahir holds a BSc degree in Economics & Finance from the University of Texas, Austin, US. Under his leadership, Ananta Group, with an impressive annual turnover of $400 million and employment for over 31,000 people, has positioned itself among the top diversified businesses. Zahir currently serves as the Vice President of the Bangladesh Economic Zone Investors Association. He previously led UCB as vice-chairman from 2013 to 2015. He is the son of the late Humayun Zahir, one of the sponsors of UCB and a renowned industrialist, philanthropist, & socialite.

Eminent business entrepreneur Md. Tanvir Khan is the managing director of J.K. Group of Industries. He is the eldest son of prominent business tycoon Md. Jahangir Alam Khan, one of the sponsors of UCB. As a dedicated philanthropist, he is associated with J.K. Memorial Hospital, an 80-bed non-profit hospital in Chattogram. Md. Tanvir Khan is a member of the executive committee of Chattogram Samity-Dhaka, Savar Golf Club, Dhaka Boat Club, BGMEA Apparel Club, and Gulshan Club. Mr. Khan, a CIP, served on the board of the Bangladesh Philippines Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BPCCI). He was recognized as the highest taxpayer under the age of forty for the 2016-17 assessment year.

Md. Shazzad Hossoin is a former executive director of Bangladesh Bank, with extensive knowledge of banking and economics.

Md. Yusuf Ali has had an illustrious career in managerial positions in various financial institutions.
Obaidur Rahman is a prominent Chartered Accountant.
