Business Report :
Around Tk35,000 crore was looted from the power and energy sector of the country in 2022, according to a Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) study report.
“The government needs to conduct further investigations to determine the exact amount of money that has been misappropriated in this sector over the past 15 years,” CAB’s Energy Adviser Prof M Shamsul Alam said after disclosing the research findings at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity.
Shamsul Alam suggested that the names of individuals involved in corruption or embezzlement related to electricity, primary fuel, and renewable energy supply should be publicly disclosed, and they should be prosecuted.
The organisation also urged the government not to hike electricity and fuel prices for the next three years.
They also put forward a 10-point demand including the formation of a commission to reform the energy sector, appointing skilled, neutral and honest professionals as BERC members through a search committee.
Additionally, the organisation called for the change in top officials’ posts at Petrobangla, BPC, PDB, REB, SREDA, and various companies in the power and energy sector.
