BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is set to begin a series of official and symbolic engagements following his return to Bangladesh on Thursday from long years of exile in the United Kingdom.

Party sources said, after offering Jummah prayers today, Tarique Rahman will visit the grave of his late father, former president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman, to pay homage. He will later travel to the National Memorial in Savar, where he is scheduled to place wreaths in honour of the martyrs of the Liberation War.

On the third day of his itinerary, Saturday (27 December), Tarique Rahman will visit the grave of Inqilab Mancha leader Sharif Osman bin Hadi, who was shot dead earlier this month. He will then proceed to the Election Commission to submit his voter registration application.
Later in the day, the BNP leader is expected to visit the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), widely known as Pongu Hospital, to enquire about those injured during the July Uprising.

Tarique Rahman’s return comes nearly two decades after his arrest in 2007 amid political upheaval during the 1/11 period. After being released from jail in 2008, he left for the UK with his family for medical treatment and had been living there since.
To mark his homecoming, thousands of supporters from across the country are gathering in Dhaka.
