BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman is set to be registered as a voter on December 27, party Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has said.
Salahuddin Ahmed made the disclosure on Monday following a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka.
A three-member BNP delegation, led by Salahuddin, met the CEC at his office around 3:00pm. The delegation also included BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council member Ismail Zabihullah and former Election Commission acting secretary Mohammad Zakaria.
Party sources said the meeting focused on the process of enrolling Tarique Rahman’s name in the voter list and the legal framework governing his eligibility to contest the upcoming general election, as he is currently not a registered voter.
The discussions also covered procedural and legal issues related to voter registration and candidacy ahead of the 13th national election, as well as Tarique Rahman’s scheduled return to Bangladesh on December 25 after 18 years in exile.
Under existing election rules, once the election schedule is announced, both voter registration and eligibility to contest polls require approval from the Election Commission. During the meeting, the BNP delegation sought clarification from the commission regarding these procedures.
